FIFA Rankings
The FIFA rankings have recently come out this month and Spain still tops the list followed by Germany, Uruguay, Netherlands, and Portugal to round out the top five. The United States moved down two positions to be in 29th place. In their conference the US is second behind Mexico. FIFA considers four factors when calculating the rank of a team. Those factors are match result, match status, opposition strength and region strength. Match result would be win, loss or tie. a team receives three points for a win, one point for a tie and zero for a loss. Match status would be what level of competition the game is, obviously a world cup game will receive more value or weight than a friendly game. The way to calculate opposition strength is by using the formula 200-their current ranking divided by 100. Their are currently six regions in the FIFA system, each of the confederations has a different ranking. To find out the regional strength you use Team 1 regional ranking + Team 2 regional ranking divided by 2. The way FIFA takes all these factors into account is by using the formula 100*(result points*result strength*opposition strength*regional strength)
